OnePlus 6 gets OxygenOS Open Beta 2 with performance and front camera optimizations

On Monday, OnePlus released the first OxygenOS Open Beta for the OnePlus 6. The first beta release, like the two Android P betas that OnePlus previously released, is based on Android Pie. Now, the company has released OxygenOS Open Beta 2 for the OnePlus 6 which brings improvements to Wi-Fi stability, background power consumption, image quality for the front-facing camera, performance/scrolling improvements, and more.

Changelog: OxygenOS Open Beta 2 (Android Pie) for the OnePlus 6

  • System
    • Improved stability for Wi-Fi connection

    • Optimized background power consumption control

    • Optimization for the pocket mode to reduce accidental touches

  • Launcher
    • Optimized multitasking UI

  • Camera
    • Optimized image quality for front camera

  • Messages
    • Improved UI for Verification Codes (for OTP), making it easier to find what you want

Since I just received the update, I can’t say whether the changes to Wi-Fi stability, background power consumption, pocket mode, or front-facing camera make a big difference. I’ve never had problems with any of them, so I wouldn’t be able to compare the update anyway. Besides the fixes mentioned in the official changelog, I also discovered that the scrolling/touch latency issues in the first OxygenOS Open Beta have been fixed. Users who flashed the equivalent HydrogenOS update also report that the performance has improved. Lastly, another change that wasn’t documented in the official changelog is the addition of the volume settings shortcut below the volume panel. This shortcut is also present in the Android Pie release for the Google Pixel, so it’s nice to see that OnePlus has added it in OxygenOS as well.

If you’re interested in updating to the latest version but haven’t received the update notification yet, you can download the full OTA from the link below. You can sideload it in TWRP or by choosing the “local upgrade” option in the system updater app. Be warned that if you flash the update, you’ll lose any boot image modifications like TWRP or Magisk so you’ll need to reflash them afterward. Lastly, do note that OnePlus hasn’t submitted the beta ROM’s build fingerprint to Google for certification. That means the SafetyNet Attestation API will mark your device as unrecognized and thus you won’t be able to use apps like Pokemon Go or Google Pay unless you modify the build.prop to change the build fingerprint manually.
