With over 200 wearable devices on the market, how do you decide what smartwatch to buy? You can narrow things down based on whether you want a Fashion Watch, a Sports Watch, or a Watch for its utility, but you’re still left with an overload of choice. No matter which smartwatch you decide to go with, make sure it’s powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform which is coming first to upcoming smartwatches from Montblanc, Louis Vuitton, and Fossil Group.
The new Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform lets consumers choose a smartwatch that suits their needs without compromising on battery life. Flaunt your watch’s beauty with a Fashion Watch, get fit with a Sports Watch, or go on an extended business trip with a utility-focused Watch. Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform makes all three use cases possible for smartwatches, and in fact, Qualcomm announced three personalized experiences (with more to come) to show how the new platform lets consumers enjoy the best of all three worlds.
Enhanced Ambient Mode
Combine the beauty of a Fashion watch with the power of a smartwatch. The Enhanced Ambient Mode on the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform allows watches to have an always-on display with a smooth second hand, live complications (date, heart rate, step count, etc.), color, and adaptive brightness. Fashion and luxury brands can take advantage of the new Enhanced Ambient Mode to let consumers show off their smartwatch at all times. Why buy a smartwatch if you’re going to turn off the display 24/7?
Dedicated Sports Experiences
Combine the incredible battery longevity of a Sports watch with the power of a smartwatch. Dedicated Sports Experiences on the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform is designed for consumers who want to get or stay fit. Whether you’re running a marathon, swimming a long distance, biking in a race, or hiking a tall mountain, you need a smartwatch that can track your location and monitor your heart rate without dying on you. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 3100 platform makes that happen by providing up to 15 hours of use. (Based on a typical 450mAh battery capacity.)
Traditional Watch Mode
You need your smartwatch to be smart, but you also need it to be a watch. There’s nothing worse than having your smartwatch die on you, leaving you with no easy way to tell the time. With the Traditional Watch Mode on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform, you can extend your smartwatch’s battery life up to 1 week once your smartwatch is at 15% battery capacity. The Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform shuts down Wear OS while still showing your watch face with the time, smooth second hand and date, so your smartwatch can continue being useful to you. No need to run around with a battery-depleted smartwatch around your wrist anymore, the Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform gives consumers peace of mind.
Better Battery Life for your Next Smartwatch
So how has Qualcomm delivered on ensuring your smartwatch, powered by the Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform, will suit your needs? It’s thanks to the hierarchical architecture of the new Snapdragon Wear platform. The new platform consists of high-performance quad-core A7 application processors, a highly-efficient integrated DSP, and a new ultra-low-power co-processor. When you’re using your smartwatch, the high-performance A7 processors ensure that you’ll have a rich multimedia experience whether you’re navigating, checking your notifications, talking to the voice assistant, and much more. When your smartwatch is idle, the ultra-low-power co-processor ensures your needs are taken care of without draining away the battery. All of the enhancements that Qualcomm made to the Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform allow for an increase of between 4 and 12 hours of battery life.*
The new co-processor in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform is especially interesting. It took 2 years for Qualcomm to develop, after all. Not only is the co-processor itself incredibly small (only 21mm²), but it requires 20 times less power than the high-performance application processor! Qualcomm says that 95% of the time, most smartwatches are idle, which is the ideal scenario for the co-processor to kick in. But the co-processor isn’t dormant when you’re actively using the smartwatch. In fact, it works with the application processor to enhance the user experience with better audio, visuals, and sensory experiences.
And then there’s the new power management sub-system. Designed for low power operation while reducing the size, it brings in a new DSP framework with support for next-generation sensor processing in an open execution environment. The dual-display architecture lets the application processor and the co-processor power the smartwatch display independently, maximizing battery life.
*When compared to the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 platform. Exact battery life improvement depends on the battery capacity, display size, and device configuration of the smartwatch.
Conclusion
With so much choice on the market, it can be hard to decide which smartwatch you’ll make your next purchase. But the clear benefits that the new Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform bring to the table show that you’ll definitely want to wait to buy a smartwatch running on the new platform. Smartwatches from Montblanc, Louis Vuitton, and Fossil Group will be the first to sport the new Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform, so be on the lookout for those smartwatches. More smartwatches powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Wear platform will be on the way, giving you more choice for your next smartwatch purchase.
